An industry-standard high speed, low latency interface to a Compaq System Area Network (SAN)
A PCI form factor adapter supporting the Tandem ServerNet Interface
The SAN ServerNet Adapter may be used with the ProLiant Cluster Series F Model 100, F/500 cluster kits and Cluster Bundles as an optional
interconnect for Cluster heartbeat and management communications.
OVERVIEW
Usage
A high speed, low latency Network Interface Card (NIC) designed for inter-processor communications. The ServerNet Interface Adapter (SPA) may be
used in server and workstation clusters.
Configuration Flexibility
The SPA can be used in a point to point network configuration. It supports either single or dual network cables for high availability cluster communications.
Fault Tolerant Transaction Support
Transactions are processed through the SPAS across one of the NIC ports. If the port fails, and the interconnect is mirrored using the alternate NIC port,
transactions will be automatically rerouted through the second or alternate port without loss of data or performance.
Dual Port Data Performance Capability
The SPA supports dual ports for data transmission in a point to point network. Network performance depends on such factors as the software protocol
selected and block size allocated. Theoretical bandwidth performance per fabric is
50 MB/s.
Manageability/Redundancy Network Interface Fault Recovery Tracking
The SPA is supported by the Compaq Insight Manager for fault detection and operational management. The adapter drivers are provided as part of the
Compaq SSD for ease of installation.
Compatibility and Integration Testing
The SPA has been tested on a variety of Compaq product families including ProLiant Servers and Professional Workstations.

Option Kit Contents
SPA Adapter: One PCI adapter with a DB60 Pin connector, software support CD, install guide, product quality statements, and warranty information.
This adapter is installed in Compaq ProLiant Servers or Professional Workstations that are participating in a cluster. SPA Adapter Part Number 309833-
B22 and 292 are required in all Pentium II and Xeon based machines. They can be used in conjunction with part Number 309833-B21 and 291 adapters
installed in Pentium and Pentium Pro machines with software to refresh for Pentiuim and Pentium Pro SPA drivers.
SPA Adapter Interface Cables: Either a 4M or 30M, 60 wire, shielded, twisted pair cable, with 60-pin connectors are used by the SPA Interface Adapter
for use in either intra-rack mount (4M), inter-rack mount (30M), and stand alone servers (4M - 30M). It is recommended that 309834-B23 be used for all
Rack mounted solutions for ease of installation and maintenance.
Warranty
One year limited warranty. Certain restrictions and exclusions apply. Consult the Compaq Customer Support Center for details.
SPECIFICATIONS
Network Interface
The SPA is implemented with 18 signal wires/port, two clocks/port, and a ground. Signal Interface is Low Voltage Differential Signaling (LVDS). This
requires a unique parallel cable in either 4M or 30M lengths.
System Area Network Architecture
Servers that have been tested with the ServerNet adapter card are the PL850, PL1850, PL2500, PL3000, PL5000, PL5500, PL6000, PL6500 and
PL7000.
System Area Network Data Transfer Routing
System Area Network data transfer routing algorithms and hardware assisted data buffering provide a constant data transfer rate. The SAN wormhole
routing technology, combined with packet switching, allows an aggregate data rate based on the Mesh concept up to 100 MB/s in a two node single fabric
SAN.
Connectors
