This chapter identifies the components that make up the cluster configuration and defines how those components are configured in the cluster. Cluster components include servers, reliable internal storage, cluster interconnect, and software. Overview of Compaq ProLiant Clusters for UnixWare 7 A cluster is a collection of servers, storage, and operating system and management software that allows independent servers and storage to act as a single system. The cluster presents a single-system image to clients; provides protection against hardware, operating system, middleware, and application failures; and provides configuration options for load balancing. Clustering is an established technology that provides one or more of the following benefits: I Availability I Scalability I Manageability Compaq Confidential Need to Know Required Writer: Hilary Stead Project: Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/ML330 Quick Install Guide Comments: Part Number: 189018-001 File Name: b-ch1 Architecture of Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7.doc Last Saved On: 6/27/00 2:46 PM 1-2 Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/ML330 Quick Install Guide I Investment protection I Operational efficiency TM The reliability of the SCO UnixWare 7 NonStop Clusters technology ensures that your applications and data are protected from multiple error conditions. For more details on Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7, see the Compaq High Availability website at http://www.compaq.com/highavailability Cluster Configuration The Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/ML330 Quick Install provides reliable storage for the cluster using cross-node mirroring (CNM) of internal SCSI disks. This entry level cluster configuration includes two Compaq ProLiant ML330 servers directly connected with an Ethernet crossover cable. Hardware components include: I Two identical Compaq ProLiant ML330 servers with an embedded network interface controller (NIC) in each server used as the cluster interconnect I At least one internal SCSI hard drive per server, 9.1 GB or greater I At least one Compaq NC3123 Fast Ethernet NIC PCI, 10/100 WOL installed in slot 5 of each server for public local area network (LAN) access I One Ethernet crossover cable (provided in the cluster kit) I One Cluster Integrity (CI) serial cable (provided in the cluster kit) Software components include: I SCO UnixWare 7.1.1 with Mirroring Option or the Online Data Manager (ODM) Media Kit (provided in the cluster kit) TM I SCO UnixWare 7 NonStop Clusters 7.1.1+IP Media Kit (provided in the cluster kit) I Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 Quick Install CDs (provided in the cluster kit) Compaq Confidential Need to Know Required Writer: Hilary Stead Project: Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/ML330 Quick Install Guide Comments: Part Number: 189018-001 File Name: b-ch1 Architecture of Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7.doc Last Saved On: 6/27/00 2:46 PM Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/ML330 Clustering Overview 1-3 TM I Compaq SmartStart and Support Software CD (provided with the Compaq ProLiant server) I Compaq Management CD (provided with the Compaq ProLiant server) TM NOTE: SCO UnixWare 7 and UnixWare 7 NonStop Clusters software licenses must be purchased separately through your SCO reseller or distributor. To locate a convenient SCO reseller or distributor in order to purchase licenses, see the SCO website at http://www.sco.com The Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/ML330 Kit configuration uses a shared storage technique called cross-node mirroring (CNM). This configuration supports two Compaq ProLiant ML330 servers as cluster nodes and a dedicated interconnect using the embedded NIC in each server connected by one Ethernet crossover cable (Figure 1-1). A CI serial cable is required to maintain cluster integrity. This configuration requires a Compaq NC3123 Fast Ethernet NIC PCI, 10/100 in each node for access to the public network. Figure 1-2 depicts a cluster in which the data on the disks in node 1 is replicated on the disks in node 2. Because the replicated, or mirrored, data is kept synchronized between the two servers, current data is available even if one of the nodes fails. Reliable storage configuration in clusters using cross-node mirroring Compaq ProLiant ML330 Servers The Compaq ProLiant ML330 delivers the latest performance features at an affordable price. This business-critical server provides Intel Pentium III technology, Error Checking and Correcting Memory, easy expandability, and leading server management tools. Server features include: I Intel Pentium III processor with 133-MHz front side system bus I Capacity for four 18-GB hard drives and one 9-GB hard drive for a maximum capacity of 81 GB of internal storage I Three available removable media bays I IDE CD-ROM drive I 1.44-MB, 3.5-inch diskette drive I Embedded PCI 10/100 Wake-On-LAN (WOL) NIC I Integrated Single Channel Wide-Ultra2 SCSI Controller Compaq Confidential Need to Know Required Writer: Hilary Stead Project: Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/ML330 Quick Install Guide Comments: Part Number: 189018-001 File Name: b-ch1 Architecture of Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7.doc Last Saved On: 6/27/00 2:46 PM Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 U/ML330 Clustering Overview 1-5 I Integrated ATI Rage XL Video Controller I Three available 32-bit PCI slots and two 64-bit PCI slots I CE Mark compliant power supply Cluster Interconnect Compaq ProLiant Clusters for SCO UnixWare 7 with the ML330 use a dedicated, private Ethernet interconnect network. The Ethernet interconnect uses the embedded NICs and an Ethernet crossover cable to connect the two nodes. The cluster nodes use the interconnect data path to support the single-system image capabilities of the cluster, including: I Cross-node mirroring I Cluster-wide file system I Cluster-wide process management, migration, and load balancing I Cluster-wide networking and Cluster Virtual IP (CVIP) I Cluster-wide system administration and management Ethernet Crossover Cable The Ethernet crossover cable provides the node-to-node communication data path for the cluster. Cluster Integrity Serial Cable The CI serial cable is required to prevent a condition known as split-brain. Split-brain is a condition where both nodes in a two-node cluster think they are the root node and both try to operate as the root node. Since the active root node mounts the root file system and runs several critical cluster-wide functions, two nodes trying to behave as the root node is undesirable. NOTE: The CI serial cable may be referred to as the split-brain avoidance (SBA) serial cable in UnixWare software and documentation. Compaq Insight Manager Overview Compaq Insight Manager is the Compaq console-based application for managing networked devices. Compaq Insight Manager provides intelligent monitoring and alerting capabilities for the critical systems in a distributed enterprise. Compaq Insight Manager consists of a console application and a set of server- or client-based management data collection agents. Key subsystems are designed to make system health, configuration, and performance data available to the agent software. The agents act upon data by initiating SNMP alarms in the event of faults and by providing updated management information. Compaq Insight Manager is located on the Compaq Management CD. Install Compaq Insight Manager on a Win32 desktop computer using the instructions provided on the CD. The nodes within the cluster appear to Compaq Insight Manager as separate UnixWare 7 systems. Refer to the Compaq Insight Manager Users Guide included on the Compaq Management CD for more information on installing Compaq Insight Manager.
