About This Guide
This guide is designed to be used as step-by-step instructions for installation
and as a reference for operation, troubleshooting, and future upgrades. The
chapters are written in a logical sequence to expedite first-time installation. An
overview of the chapters follows.
The ProLiant DL360 server contains unique features and options, as well as
software to enhance configuration and operation. To appreciate the server's
capabilities, see Chapter 1, "Server Features."
Before installing your server, install the hardware options you purchased with
your ProLiant DL360 server. See Chapter 2, "Installing Hardware Options."
Ensure that your rack site complies with required conditions before preparing
and installing your server into a Compaq rack. See Chapter 3, "Installing the
ProLiant DL360 Server."
Now that your server is installed and operating, learn more about the following
items:
I Integrated Smart Array Controller a standard array controller that
supports fault tolerance for internal mass storage. See Chapter 4,
"Integrated Smart Array Controller."
I Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition an optional expansion board that
supports remote access to the server. See Chapter 5, "Remote Insight

Configuring your ProLiant DL360 server for the first time is made easier with
utilities on the Compaq SmartStart and Support Software CD. The SmartStart
utility can assist you by installing drivers for hardware and operating systems.
See Chapter 7, "Server Configuration and Utilities."
Compaq's standard management software includes the Integrated Management
Log (IML) that records diagnostic information. Review the capabilities and
functions of this software feature in Chapter 8, "Integrated Management Log."
To prevent hardware damage and loss of data, the ProLiant DL360 server is
designed to operate only when all components are functioning properly. The
server generates event messages and/or suspends operation if a component
becomes degraded from wear or becomes unseated from its connection.
Chapter 9, "Troubleshooting," helps you determine the source of the error and
suggests steps to remedy the situation.
The appendices at the end of this guide provide supplementary and reference
information, such as regulatory notices, guidelines for preventing electrostatic
damage to components, explanations of LED indicators, battery replacement,
and switch settings for the ProLiant DL360 server.

I The full weight of the rack rests on the leveling jacks.

The ProLiant DL360 server's Integrated Smart Array Controller is a
dual-channel Wide Ultra2 SCSI array controller. Both channels support
low-voltage differential (LVD) SCSI devices. SCSI port 1 supports the
external SCSI connector on the rear panel of the server. SCSI port 2 is
dedicated to controlling the SCSI drives in the internal drive bays.
Among its standard features, the ProLiant DL360 server has minimized
cabling, integrated processor power modules, a removable CD-ROM/diskette
drive assembly, and a unit identification switch that simplifies the logistics of
service procedures. The ProLiant DL360 server also supports numerous
optional features, including processor and memory upgrades, full-graphic
remote management capability, and additional connectivity for enhanced array
control of internal and external storage devices. In-rack serviceability is
possible with an optional rack management solution that contains ball-bearing
slide rails and a cable management system.
This combination of features, performance, form factor, and Compaq
manageability enables the ProLiant DL360 server to support Web and
application hosting and infrastructure applications, while also providing
maximum density in rack configurations.

ProLiant DL360 servers provide support for peripheral components. The
expansion slots on the PCI riser board assembly are configured as follows:

The Telco option contains a set of variable-depth rack brackets that support
installation of the ProLiant DL360 server into a Telco rack. These brackets
adjust to fit several types of Telco racks, and the kit contains screws for

Third-Party Cabinet Rack Option
Compaq provides a third-party cabinet rack option that allows you to mount
the ProLiant DL360 server in a third-party rack. The variable-depth rack rails
support server installation in racks with depths of 28 to 33 inches (71.12 to
83.82 cm) with cable management tray or depths of 22 to 33 inches (55.8 to
83.82 cm) without cable management tray.

The desktop chassis option consists of a slide-on sheet metal chassis that
converts the rack model ProLiant DL360 server for desktop use. After being
installed in the desktop chassis, the server can be deployed for non-rack use.

Default Configuration
When the server is first started, the system ROM detects the unconfigured
state of the hardware and provides default configuration settings for most
devices. By providing this initialization, the system can run diagnostics and
other software applications before running the normal SmartStart and system
configuration programs.
NOTE: If you format and partition your boot drive before running SmartStart and the
system configuration programs, you will not be able to create a system partition or use
the management features that it provides.
As part of the default configuration process, you are prompted for your
intended operating system. On subsequent restarts, you may change your
operating system selection as needed.

An information message indicating that you are running with a default
configuration occurs each time you start the system until you run the System
Configuration Utility.
Compaq SmartStart
SmartStart, which is located on the SmartStart and Support Software CD, is
the recommended way to configure your Compaq server with operating system
software. SmartStart helps you achieve a well-integrated server that ensures
maximum manageability and dependability. For additional information about
configuration, see Chapter 7, "Server Configuration and Utilities."
Server Management
Server Management features perform the following functions:
I The Server Parameter Tracking Utility uses a combination of hardware,
firmware, and industry-standard management software to provide timely
server-environment and subsystem information. This information
includes fault tolerance, performance, and configuration status.
I The Server Fault Tolerance feature supports several fault-tolerance
options for internal disk subsystems and memory system error
correction.
I The Rapid Recovery Services provide fast identification and resolution
of complex faults. This integrated server management includes Server
Health Logs, Automatic Server Recovery-2 (ASR-2), and Compaq
Integrated Remote Console (IRC).
I The Integrated Management Log (IML) provides a detailed log of key
system events. This log is accessible by utilities, including Compaq
Insight Manager and the Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition option.

Disk Management/Fault Tolerance
Disk management allows the server to recover from a hard drive problem
without interrupting the server's performance. The SCSI Managed Array
Technology (Smart) controller can provide data fault tolerance on internal
drives at the following RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) levels:
I RAID 0 drive striping
I RAID 1 drive mirroring
Compaq Insight Manager
Compaq Insight Manager is installed from the Compaq Management CD and
is an easy-to-use, intuitive software utility designed for collecting server
information. Compaq Insight Manager is used for the following functions:
I Sending fault-condition alerts to a predetermined destination
I Monitoring fault conditions and server performance
I Controlling server security and configuration
I Controlling servers remotely
I Initiating rapid recovery services
With Compaq servers, every hardware subsystem--including disk storage,
system memory, and system processor--has a robust set of management
capabilities. Compaq Full-Spectrum Fault Management prevents faults before
they happen, keeps the system running in the unlikely event of a failure, and
delivers rapid server recovery to normal operation after a fault. See Chapter 7,
"Server Configuration and Utilities," for more information.
Compaq System Configuration Utility
The Compaq System Configuration Utility performs a wide range of
configuration activities including the following:
I Configuring PCI boards automatically
I Providing switch and jumper settings
I Resolving resource conflicts in areas such as memory, processor
upgrades, and mass storage devices such as hard drives, tape drives, and
diskette drives
I Setting and storing power-on features such as date and time

The first time the server is configured, the SmartStart program automatically
creates a system partition and installs the System Configuration Utility.
For more information, refer to the SmartStart documentation and the
Documentation CD shipped with your server.
Automatic Server Recovery-2 (ASR-2)
Automatic Server Recovery-2 (ASR-2) enables the server to boot
automatically from either the operating system or the Compaq Utilities. If
there is a critical system failure, ASR-2 automatically restarts the server and
pages a designated system administrator.
For additional information on the ASR-2 feature, refer to the Documentation
CD that shipped with your server.
Compaq Integrated Remote Console
The standard Compaq Integrated Remote Console (IRC) performs a wide
range of configuration activities. The console has the following features:
I Is accessible with an ANSI terminal
I Operates independently of the operating system
I Provides support for remote server reboot
I Provides access to system configuration
I Uses out-of-band communication with dedicated external management
modem

Unit Identification Switches (Front and Rear)
The ProLiant DL360 server is the first Compaq product to offer Unit
Identification switches. Each ProLiant DL360 server has two unit
identification switches, one on the front of the server and one on the back of
the server. When activated from the front of the server, the Front Unit
Identification switch illuminates two LEDs. An LED on the front of the server
indicates that the switch is activated. An LED on the rear of the server, in the
center of the Rear Unit Identification LED switch, provides a visual reference
for service personnel.
When moving between the front and rear of a rack filled with ProLiant DL360
servers, you can use the unit identification switches to quickly identify one or
more ProLiant DL360 servers that require service or maintenance.

Status LED Indicators
The ProLiant DL360 server contains several sets of LEDs that indicate the
status of hardware components and settings. For a detailed explanation of LED
status and locations, see Appendix C, "Status LED Indicators."
Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition
(Optional)
The Compaq Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition option is a PCI-based,
single-board computer that is installed to provide remote management of a
server, regardless of the state of the host server operating system or the host
CPU.
A built-in Intel i960 processor allows the Remote Insight Lights-Out Edition
module to work independent of the host server operating system. This module
provides remote access and video, sends alerts, and performs other functions,
even if the host server operating system is not responding.

Lights-Out Edition (Optional)."

Installing Hardware Options
This chapter provides information and procedures for installing hardware
options on ProLiant DL360 servers. For complete instructions, refer to the
installation documentation shipped with each option kit. Refer to the following
items for an illustrated guide to installing Compaq option upgrades:
I Hardware installation and configuration poster shipped with your server
I Labels attached to the inside of the system unit access panel
To streamline the installation process, read the installation instructions for all
of the hardware options and identify similar steps before installing the
hardware options.
After you install hardware options, proceed with the server installation
procedures in Chapter 3, "Installing the ProLiant DL360 Server."
If you encounter any problems during installation, contact your Compaq
authorized reseller.
WARNINGS: To reduce the risk of personal injury or damage to the equipment:
I Heed all warnings and cautions throughout the installation instructions.
