appropriate services. The increased level of support provides for a higher level of storage system availability for the customer.
OVERVIEW
Hot Plug Tape offers customers a high availability data protection backup device within 3 different capacities. Compaq is first to market Hot Plug Tape for
Compaq Servers and StorageWorksTM External Storage Enclosures by Compaq. Hot Plug Tape is also the first to be supported on Compaq's Smart
Array controllers including the newest the 5300 Series.

High Availability
Hot Plug Tape is considered a high availability device because your server does not need to be taken down to replace a failed tape drive. Simply pull out
the off-line device and plug in a new device.

Capacity /Technology
Hot plug tape is available in three different capacities 20/40GB, 35/70GB and 50/100GB, and in two different tape formats, AIT and DAT.
Compatibility Testing
Hot plug tape has been tested and certified with Compaq ProLiant and AlphaServers, External Storage Enclosures, Smart Array controllers, and
Integrated Smart Array Controllers.
Easy Installation
Hot plug tape is designed for easy installations. Just open the box, identify the hot plug bay that is available for this device, and plug it in.
Mix and Match
Hot plug tape was designed with reduced cost of ownership in mind. Now there is no need to purchase a separate controller just for your tape drive. The
hot plug capabilities give our customers the ability to mix tape drives and hard drives on the same SCSI bus.
Serviceability
Servicing your tape drive has never been this easy. With hot plug tape, there are no tools required and you do not have to power down your server.
Simply pull out your defective device and plug in your new one.
Manageability
Compaq makes managing your tape device simple with the Compaq Insight Manager and Tape Storage Management Console. These two tools help
customers diagnose problems and easily upgrade firmware.
Performance
Because hot plug tape is offered in three different devices, the customer can actually chose which device will provide the right performance for their
environment.

Scalability
Customers have the opportunity to build the solution that will meet their needs. All you have to do is decide how much data needs to be backed up and
use the guide below to determine what hardware is needed.
Performance
If you choose the 20/40-GB DAT hot plug tape, you can achieve 8.6 GB/hr backup times. With the AIT 35GB hot plug your backup speed increases to
14.4 GB/hr and with AIT 50GB hot plug your backup times increase further to 21.6 GB/hr.
Software Supported
All three hot plug tape drives are compatible with VERITAS Backup Exec, Computer Associates ARCserve and Dantz Retrospect software programs.
Scalability
With hot plug tape you can scale from 1 tape device up to 6 inside of Compaq's External Storage Enclosures. You can also use these hot plug tape
devices to upgrade Compaq's TA1000 AIT Tape Array 5-drive configuration.
Servers Supported
Hot plug tape is supported with Compaq ProLiantTM and Alpha Servers. A full list is included in this QuickSpec for easy reference.
