Enterprise Backup Solution with VERITAS Backup Exec User Guide xi 1 Features Enterprise Backup Solution with VERITAS Backup Exec Solution Features The Compaq StorageWorksTM Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) is an integration of backup and restore application software with industry-standard hardware, providing a complete enterprise class solution. Compaq has partnered with VERITAS to provide a solution that supports the backup and restore processes of homogeneous and heterogeneous operating systems using VERITAS Backup Exec software. This backup solution is a storage management software package that focuses on data backup and restore using a digital linear tape (DLT), advanced intelligent tape (AIT), or super digital linear tape (SDLT) automated library and fibre channel technology. The EBS successfully combines the functionality and management of EBS Storage Area Network (SAN) high availability software, along with scaling tools to integrate tape and disk storage subsystems in the same SAN environment. Features incorporated in the solution include database protection, storage management agents, and options for highly specialized networking environments. Enterprise data backup and restore can be accomplished with different tape devices in various configurations using a variety of transport methods such as the corporate communication network, a server SCSI bus, or a fibre channel infrastructure. EBS uses a SAN that provides dedicated bandwidth independent of the Local Area Network (LAN). This independence allows single or multiple backup or restore jobs to run without the network traffic that is caused by traditional data protection environments. Enterprise Backup Solution with VERITAS Backup Exec User Guide 11 Solution Components The EBS with VERITAS Backup Exec may include: Servers containing fibre channel host bus adapters SAN switch, Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) switch, or fibre channel hub Fibre channel-to-SCSI bridge Tape library Figure 11: Storage Area Network with Enterprise Backup Solution 12 Enterprise Backup Solution with VERITAS Backup Exec User Guide This solution supports Compaq ProLiantTM and/or other approved multi-vendor x86 servers running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Novell NetWare interconnected through StorageWorks SAN switches, FC-AL switches and fibre channel hubs. The solution connects one or more differential SCSI libraries through the Compaq StorageWorks Modular Data Router or Fibre Channel Tape Controller-II. The backup software application manages the tape backup and restore operations and controls the flow of information between the tape library and the servers. This prevents two servers within the EBS from allocating a device or media at the same time. When a job requiring tape resources is ready to run, the application checks if any media device in the specified shared device group is available. Jobs submitted using this backup software are run locally on the backup solution server that the job was submitted to. Data is sent over the SAN to the tape library rather than over the LAN. This achieves greater speed and reduces network traffic. Jobs and devices can be managed and viewed from any server, or client connected within the EBS that has this backup software solution installed. The supported operating systems include: Windows 2000 Windows NT 4.0 Novell NetWare The first server is the primary backup software server and each subsequent server is a secondary server. Each SCSI bus should be limited to two SCSI tape drives, and the tape library SCSI IDs must be set as follows: Bus 0: -- SCSI ID 1 = Robot (If applicable) -- SCSI ID 2 = Tape drive -- SCSI ID 3 = Tape drive Bus 1 (and all succeeding SCSI buses) -- SCSI ID 1 = Robot (If applicable) -- SCSI ID 2 = Tape drive -- SCSI ID 3 = Tape drive Tape Libraries A core advantage of Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) with VERITAS Backup Exec is the centralization of tape libraries and tape devices. Tape libraries automate the tape handling process, freeing valuable administrative resources. Implementing enterprise-class libraries within the EBS provides these critical solution features: high availability, proven reliability, manageability, and multi-unit scalability. Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise Backup Solution with VERITAS Backup Exec 23 Installing Components Mixed Media Support With the introduction of Backup Exec 8.6 for Windows NT and Windows 2000, Compaq introduces mixed media support with EBS on the ESL9000 and MSL5000 series libraries. This support allows customers to mix legacy DLT and new SDLT drives in the same library and provides a strong investment protection feature for DLT drive owners. The EBS with VERITAS Backup Exec supports mixed media within a single library. With mixed media support, an ESL9000 library can contain any combination of Compaq 35/70 DLT, Compaq 40/80 DLT, and Compaq SDLT drives. An MSL5000 series library can contain any combination of Compaq 40/80 DLT and Compaq SDLT drives. Mixed media support in Backup Exec is provided through the use of media partitions. The tape slots of the library must be logically partitioned so that like media and drives are grouped together. For specific information on creating media partitions, refer to the VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows NT/2000 User Guide. StorageWorks ESL9000 DLT/SDLT Enterprise Tape Library Series The ESL9000 Enterprise DLT/SDLT Tape Library Series offers high availability and scalability features not normally found in tape libraries. These features provide maximum uptime. Based on PCI backplane architecture, the ESL9000 family also offers a simple upgrade path for future plug-in features such as fibre channel cards, network administration cards, or a library thin server card for direct network application support control. The StorageWorks ESL9000 Series DLT/SDLT Enterprise Tape Libraries provide the following: High Availability--As data becomes more mission critical and downtime becomes more costly to the enterprise, customers are requiring high availability consolidated storage solutions that offer hot-swappable components and redundancies of key operating subsystems (tape drives, controllers, power supplies).
