_Top of page_ Description =========== Compaq ships the industry's only modular network interface controller that provides a scalable transition path from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet to Bonded Fast Ethernet to Gigabit network connections. The Compaq NC3134 Fast Ethernet NIC includes two 10/100 Base-TX ports with optional upgrade modules for two additional 10/100 Base-TX ports, a 100 FX port, or a Gigabit port. The NC3134 provides a cost-effective transition for server NIC upgrades. Its modular design enables additional fault-tolerant redundancy and upgradability to higher network performance without having to replace the base NIC. The NIC's dual ports allow customers to configure the NC3134 for failover to achieve greater reliability or for various modes of port bonding for greater performance. The modular design of the NC3134 enables uses to upgrade to two additional 10/100 ports, a 100Mbps fiber port, or to Gigabit Ethernet SX or LX. Plug and Play compliant with the 2.2 PCI specification, this NIC automatically configures its I/O address and interrupts (IRQ) settings for easy installation. The NC3134 operating system drivers can be used for all Compaq Intel-based 10 or 100 Mbps network connections. No driver change is required when moving from 10 to 100 Mbps. Common drivers provide consistency, easy management and support, and save money and time. With the Compaq provided drivers, the NC3134 auto senses 10 or 100 Mbps and half- or full-duplex operation and automatically configures to the highest common network connection speed between the NIC and hub or switch port. Efficient data transfer between the network and PC is essential for high-performance and low CPU utilization. The NC3134 includes a 32/64-bit PCI Universal Connector to work in either 32- or 64-bit bus slots, and it supports both 33- and 66-MHz bus speeds. Adaptive Load Balancing (ALB) and Cisco's Fast EtherChannel are two port bonding methods supported by the NC3134. ALB provides both failover and balancing of transmit traffic across NICs for increased performance. For even higher performance, Cisco's Fast EtherChannel provides for switch-assisted port failover and balancing of transmit and receive traffic across all NICs. The NC3134 uses bus-mastering technology to maximize throughput and minimize CPU utilization. The NC3134 supports Interrupt Coalescence in all the major OS environments, reducing CPU utilization. The NC3134 also provides Receive Checksum Offload capabilities when it runs in a Windows 2000 environment. Network Fault Tolerance (NFT) feature, also known as "failover" and "NIC redundancy," enables the NC3134 to keep an active connection if a switch, NIC port, or hub link fails by automatically switching to a backup NIC. The NC3134 includes PCI Hot Plug support that enables PCI network controllers to be replaced or added to a server without powering down the system. This feature provides increased system availability and non-stop serviceability in business-critical computing environments.
