It is read/write compatible with the media used in the TLZ06 and TLZ6L loaders, and TLZ04 and TLZ07 drives. The DAT drive uses 4 direct-drive motors and helical-scan, read-after-write recording, with or without data compression (DC), on 60, 90 or 120 meter data cassettes. The DDS recording format implements 10 distinct error-handling techniques, including 3 levels of error correction code (ECC). The 8-Gbytes capacity of the TLZ07 tape drive is achieved by a combination of 120-meter cassette and typical 2x data compression. The TLZ07 implements the new DDS-2 media recognition system (MRS), consisting of sensors to recognize a striped tape leader used only on data-grade tapes. The MRS system is intended to eliminate performance and service issues related to customer use of audio-grade media cartridges. Data compression is software selectable on the TLZ07 tape drive and can be turned off to read and write 60 or 90 meter DAT tapes for interchange with the TLZ04 and TLZ06 tape drives.
