Description
===========
FLEXlm is a multi-platform, network-based software license management
system.
Software licenses can be made available anywhere on a network, instead of
being tied to specific machines. Users can make more efficient use of fewer
licenses by sharing them on the network. License administrators can control
who uses the licensed application and the node(s) where the licenses will be
available.
FLEXlm provides high level of application availability through redundant
servers. FLEXlm even tracks licenses during a server failure. If the server
does fail for any reason, FLEXlm automatically "fails-over" to a backup
server.
FLEXlm uses only basic industry standard networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP,
IPX/SPX). FLEXlm's protocols work without modification, or the need for
additional software to work with bridges, routers and firewalls.
FLEXlm supports a wide range of licensing policies including node-locked,
floating, name-user and usage-based licensing. Developers can put licensing
policies into their software products or into the license certificates. By
placing the most common policies directly into the application, the
developer can create shorter certificates, which makes dispensing licenses
easier. License policies also help vendors establish efficient pricing
policies, so customers who use products heavily pay more, and infrequent
users pay less. Vendors can run large-scale product evaluation programs by
issuing limited use licenses for trial periods
FLEXlm is independent of the operating system, and does not require a kernel
rebuild when adding new licenses or install new software versions.
