Description
===========
Compaq and its strategic partner, SteelEye Technology, continue to extend
the Linux clusters for ProLiant solution suite. In this announcement Compaq
and SteelEye have extended the coverage to include both IA32 and IA64
ProLiant servers and the newly announced DL380G2 Packaged Cluster as well as
extending the StorageWorks content to include the MA8000 Enterprise Storage
Subsystem. These solutions have been tested and certified by SteelEye and
Compaq to insure customer satisfaction and operational success. LifeKeeper
has been in the industry for over 8 years across a range of servers and
operating system environments. It has met the test of time and demonstrated
its robustness in multiple sites and industries. SteelEye Technology has
extended LifeKeeper to operate across the major Linux distributions, Red
Hat, Caldera, SuSE and is extending the product to meet customer demands for
business critical application and data availability.
Compaq and SteelEye have developed a Single Point of Contact (SPOC) for one
stop service and support offering from Compaq Global Services to minimize
solution integration and operations issues to improve overall customer
satisfaction. Compaq adds customer value by providing ProLiant Cluster
Install Guides for the most popular Linux solutions including DBMS products
and commercial applications across a range of Linux distribution offerings.
LifeKeeper for Linux Version 4.0 has been certified with both the Linux 2.2
and 2.4 kernels for ProLiant Clusters with the Linux distribution releases
listed above. _Top of page_
Features
========
*N-way Failover:* LifeKeeper can support the configuration and
failover of an application across more than two systems. This feature
ensures that as long as one server in the cluster remains active, an
application will be available, no matter what the sequence of failures
that occurs.
*Multi-Directional Failover:* If more than one
LifeKeeper-protected application is configured to run on the same
primary server, LifeKeeper allows each of those applications to be
configured to failover to a different backup server. This feature allows
the additional load of the failed primary server to be distributed
across multiple backup servers, rather than burdening a single backup
server with the full additional load.
*Cascading Recovery:* In LifeKeeper, applications that are
protected by more than two servers may be recovered on other servers in
the cluster based on a priority ordering. For a given application, the
servers on which it is configured are assigned priorities to determine
the sequence in which the application will move from server to server in
the event of multiple failures.
*Multiple Communication Heartbeats:* LifeKeeper allows multiple
(redundant) LAN-based heartbeat communications paths between grouped
servers, which can also be used for other system communications. Shared
Data: Storage devices, which are connected to multiple servers in the
LifeKeeper cluster, allow grouped servers to share access to the same
set of disks. In the case of a failure of the primary server, LifeKeeper
automatically manages the unlocking of the disks from the failed server,
and the locking of the disks on the next available back-up server.
*LifeKeeper Data Replication: *LifeKeeper's Data Replication
(LkDR) feature provides an integrated synchronous data mirroring
capability to the existing Linux product. SteelEye's LkDR reliably,
efficiently and consistently mirrors data to remote locations over any
IP network, Local Area Network (LAN), or Wide Area Network (WAN). It
delivers quality performance and assures data integrity. The combination
of LifeKeeper for Linux and Data Replication provides an outstanding
High Availability solution and lowers the end user's total cost of
operation. LifeKeeper with Data Replication offers administrators the
option of locating servers anywhere on the (LAN) since there are no
Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) cables to limit distance.
*Parallel Recovery: *The recovery of resources during a node
failover is now performed in parallel as much as possible to improve
node failure recovery times.
*Configurable automatic switchback: *User defined feature that
allows an application on a given node to be optionally configured to
automatically switch back to the failed node when the failure condition
is corrected. Or, the user can select the intelligent switchback
feature, which permits the administrator to decide when the switchback
will occur rather than have the switchback occur automatically when the
error condition is corrected.
*Shared Communication:* LifeKeeper can automatically manage
switching of communications resources, such as TCP/IP addresses,
allowing users to connect to an application regardless of where the
application is currently active.
*LifeKeeper GUI:* The LifeKeeper GUI is a Client/Server
application developed using Java technology, which provides a graphical
administration interface to LifeKeeper and its configuration data. This
system administration utility allows the viewing of multiple LifeKeeper
clusters remotely from a browser and allows the administrator to modify
cluster operations from the remote location giving unparalleled
flexibility for distributed site management. Compaq Insight Manager 7
and Insight Manager XE access: LifeKeeper for Linux has incorporated the
Compaq Cluster MIB and utilizes the Compaq Linux Management Agents to
communicate with Compaq's industry leading Insight Manager and Insight
Manager XE utilities. When Insight Manager performs server and cluster
discovery in the enterprise, LifeKeeper for Linux clusters operating on
Compaq ProLiant servers will be able to communicate via the Compaq
Management Agents including the Compaq Common Cluster MIB so the
enterprise administrator can discover and monitor the Linux based
servers and LifeKeeper cluster in the Insight Manager XE Cluster Monitor
application.
*Application Health Monitoring:* The LifeKeeper lkcheck daemon
process performs health monitoring of LifeKeeper-protected Apache,
Oracle, IBMUDBee and UDBEEE, IP, Sendmail Advanced Mail and Mobile
Message Servers, file system, and disk resources.
*LifeKeeper Software Development Kit (SDK):* The Software
Development Kit (SDK) provides documentation that includes an overview
of the Recovery Kit architecture, a detailed description of Recovery Kit
components and APIs, and sample code for a generic application Recovery
Kit.
*Shared-storage cluster configurations:* These LifeKeeper
configurations are constrained by the number of nodes that can connect
to a given storage device. In case of SCSI, that is 2 servers per SCSI
bus. That number can go up to 10 in Fibre-Channel based (FC-AL) clusters
which has been certified by Compaq and SteelEye.
*Cluster install Time:* Less than 1 hour for 2-node cluster,
assuming that Linux O/S is already installed and configured.
*Time to add a node to a cluster:* Under 30 minutes, assuming
Linux O/S is already installed and configured.
*Pro-Active Health Monitoring:* LifeKeeper continuously monitors
the health of the system and the application. This is important in the
event of a system failure or application malfunction since it provides
early detection and initiates failover actions for conditions that could
disrupt access to mission critical applications.
New Enhanced Features
=====================
Enhancements provided by LifeKeeper for Linux 4.0 include:
Support for Compaq's industry-standard ProLiant 32bit servers,
including the PL8500, DL580 and DL760, and Compaq's Itanium 64bit
platform - the ProLiant DL590.
Support for Compaq's StoprageWorks MA8000 Enterprise Storage
Subsystem.
Support for Compaq's new ProLiant DL380G2 Packaged Cluster.
Support for Compaq's Insight Manager XE and integration of

Clusters, Compaq TruCLuster using TruCLuster V5.1, and Compaq Open VMS
Clusters.
GUI changes to streamline even further LifeKeeper's intuitive
Java-based GUI that enables IT managers to easily implement automated
fault monitoring and recovery. The LifeKeeper Linux 4.0 GUI will feature
the ability to leverage comm path administration to have a system join
the cluster without manually configuring comm paths for each system in
the cluster. The feature will also facilitate an "unextend" capability
allowing administrators to easily remove a system from the cluster.
Further enhancements will include the Display Format Options which
provides the user the ability to resize the tree and table, sort, and
expand/collapse all.
Increased storage options to accommodate the widest range of
storage environments with an enhanced LifeKeeper Data Replication
release and support for Network Attached Storage. Storage options for
LifeKeeper now include support for low cost non-shared storage
environments, external shared SCSI, Fibre Channel, SAN, and Network
Attached Storage.
