Description
===========
The Compaq Availability Agents software increases availability by enabling
an IT Administrator to automate responses to common problems that could
cause system failure. It has a simple-to-use web-browser interface for
setting goals and rules associated with disk capacity, memory capacity, CPU
utilization and networking connectivity. Unlike other availability
management software, the Compaq Availability Agents software does not
require administrators to learn a complex scripting language before they can
set rules and policies. Based on their knowledge of a system's expected
normal behavior and an understanding of the conditions that signal problems,
administrators can put Compaq Availability Agents to work immediately -
monitoring key parameters and responding to, or notifying of, potentially
critical conditions. Because the Compaq Availability Agents software is
browser-based, it does not require a dedicated console, and can be used
anywhere, anytime. A single Administrator can set goals and rules on servers
in any location - making Compaq Availability Agents an ideal solution for
remote servers where there might be no local systems management expertise.
Compaq Availability Agents reduce the need to visit servers and enhance
virtual presence, which is the freedom to control any element of the IT
infrastructure from anywhere at anytime. Compaq Availability Agents are
simple to use and integrate seamlessly with Compaq Insight Manager XE. Like
other Compaq Management Agents, the Compaq Availability Agents software is
installed on the managed server and can be accessed directly from a browser
for stand-alone use, or it can be launched from Compaq Insight Manager XE.

Availability Management Software That Automatically Prevents Common System
Failures - within the Compaq Availability Agents software, there are four
basic agents: Disk Capacity Agent; CPU Utilization Agent, Network
Connectivity Agent and Memory Capacity Agent. Goals and rules can be
configured for each agent.
Disk Capacity Agent: This agent monitors the capacity of a disk
partition measured as percentage full or absolute size. It also monitors
a directory or a file, measuring size as a fraction of a partition size
or measuring absolute size. It can be configured to send a notification
and/or take action to delete temporary files or an individual file or
directory
CPU Utilization Agent: This agent monitors global CPU usage
and/or CPU usage of an individual process, measured as average CPU usage
over a specified time interval. It can be configured to send a
notification and/or to stop or restart an associated service.
Network Connectivity Agent: This agent can detect lost network
connectivity and unacceptable network performance. It can be configured
to send a notification and/or take three consecutive actions as
troubleshooting steps: renew DHCP leases; clear router logs; reboot
server.
Memory Capacity Agent: This agent monitors memory allocated to
processes, measured as an average over a certain period of time. It also
monitors page faults of a process, measured as a count over an interval.
It can be configured to send a notification and/or to stop or restart an
associated service.
Other capabilities within the Compaq Availability Agents software include:
Group Consolidation Service: Enables an administrator to define
a server group and to publish rules to other servers within the group.
SNMP traps: Compaq Availability Agents can be configured to send
SNMP traps to Compaq Insight Manager XE and to other SNMP-based
management consoles.
Custom Scripting Support: Advanced users can invoke custom Visual Basic
or JavaScript files to respond to events. The tracked event is passed to
the script in XML format.
